These tips will help you make sure your trip is safe and fun!
- Consult a Travel Professional
- Start preparing at least 9-12 months before your trip
- You’ll need a passport for international travel
- Some countries have VISA requirements
- Some travel requires vaccinations
- A good source for information is the state department’s website at www.state.gov and your travel professional
- Familiarize yourself with the local destination currency and exchange rate
- Check destination weather information, to assist you in packing appropriately
- Research local culture and customs
- Make sure that your cell phone works internationally
- Check with your provider about their international rates. International phone cards are very affordable as well
- Another way to keep in touch is by using internet cafes
- Make 2 copies of your passport
- Scan 1 copy into an Internet file that you can access from abroad
- Pack a copy of your passport in your luggage
- Don’t forget travel insurance
Packing for Travel
There are many things to consider when packing for a trip
- The length of the trip
- The type of trip
- The climate of the destination
- The activities (excursions) you will be involved in
- Don’t over pack. Remember, there will be times when you will have to carry all that luggage or pay someone else too
- Pack items that can be worn more than once
- Pack a good pair of walking shoes
- Place passports, travel documents, medicines and other necessities in carry-ons, in case of lost luggage.
- Don’t pack documents, keys, extra credit cards or anything that you won’t need on the trip
- Pack a list of prescription drugs, dosages, blood type, allergies, other special medical requirements, Dr’s names and contact information, pharmacist name and contact details. This can be life saving information, if you’re unconscious and unable to communicate with your caregivers.
Preparing for a Hot Weather Cruise
- Generally, pack light. (one bag and one carry-on each should be sufficient ). The airlines are beginning to charge for checked bags .
- Dress casually for hot/humid weather. (shorts and short sleeved tops)
- Shoe wear, (pack one pair each, sandals, walking shoes, formal shoes)
- Swim and beach wear, (pack two swimsuits, sunscreen lotion, sun shades and a sun hat)
- Pack attire for 1 or 2 formal nights.
- If you are taking shore excursions, check with your tour operator or travel agent to see if special clothing attire is required. (a mountain rain forest tour may be cold and/or wet)
- Pack your favorite reading material, although the ship will have a library.
- Expensive cameras, jewelry , passports, etc should be locked in the stateroom safe when not in use.
- Backpacks are great for excursions off the ship. (to carry water, cameras, maps, etc)
- Don’t pack documents, keys, extra credit cards or anything else you won't need on your trip.
- Book excursions in advance, if possible.

Travel Safety Tips
- Don’t look like a tourist
- Don’t travel with expensive watches or jewelry
- Keep expensive cameras on straps and place in a zipped pocket when not in use
- Leave expensive items in your room safe when not in use
- Gentlemen, keep wallets in your front pockets
- Ladies hand bags should have shoulder straps with zippers
- Make sure that your computer is password protected
- Never access financial accounts from non- secured internet sites
- Ask about the safety of local transportation before using it
Financial Travel Tips
- Avoid ship ATMs. They are generally very expensive
- Check with credit card provider/s about their exchange rate charge policy
- Avoid making credit card purchases where the card is physically out of sight
- Verify credit card charges after your trip is completed or during, if on an extended holiday
